Michael had a big soccer tournament the last weekend August defending his team’s championship for the title, which they won again. I got a little teary eyed watching him play, he seems to grow every season and find new strengths in his soccer skill set. It hit me that same weekend as well that Micahel is gonna be 10 very soon, sitting there it hit me how hard he has worked to thrive and persevere in life since birth. I was hospitalized for two weeks before he was born with pre-eclampsia and was induced at 36 weeks so he was a month premature. Even with all that he completely avoided NICU and was a healthy baby. He also has over came massive speech delays and going thru major surgery before he was two years old, long before he started elementary school. He went from not being anywhere near his grade levels and developmental goals to be right on track.
In addition to being my soccer buddy, he is very involved in everything that goes on in the house. One of his favorite things to do is to go grocery shopping with me and find the bargains. We were at Albertsons stocking up on some deals for the house when he remembered he was low on POWERADE® for an upcoming weekend. Thankfully Albertsons had a deal on those we were able to stock up in a variety of flavors.
Switching up flavors for Michael is a big thing. However, we always go for POWERADE® the flavors are amazing and the ION4® is an advanced electrolyte solution that replaces four electrolytes lost in sweat: sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Which with him playing clusters of games over a weekend is important, especially in the warmer weather.
Ways To Encourage And Support Your Student Athlete
Encourage School- Michael knows that good grades will always over rank anything regarding soccer. He already has his career plans laid out but he knows that school comes over everything since you never know whats going to happen.
Chores- Even though he is gone so much for soccer he knows he has responsibility at home. We make sure they are chores that can be done at random times and still be his responsibility. I really feel this both keeps him connected to his family and adds to his ability to be responsible on the field.
Uniforms- These are his responsibility, I do help with the washing and stain removal. It is his job to make sure that he has them clean, bagged for games, and all pieces ready to go. He takes a great pride in being in charge of these.
Ask Questions- I never ask Michael on the games I don’t go to if he wins. When I talk to him I always ask if he played his best and if he got any assists. Focusing on his individual contribution he realizes how it affects his team as a whole, it’s not always about the win.
Be Involved- In a lot of cases, the teams are run by parent volunteers. I am my son’s treasurer the past two years and it has been a great way to stay informed of what is going on with the league and his team.
Fuel- Making sure they eat properly and get the proper fluid intake is important to make sure they are able to play at their best. We do a lot of talk about good choices, what your body needs, and sleep needs. POWERADE® is always one of his go tos for game day.
